Manchester United v Middlesbrough Review, plus Possebon Injury update

Last night Manchester United won the match against Middlesbrough, Ronaldo was on the scoresheet but the match was marred by the injury to Rodrigo Possebon, is the news on his injury good or bad?

I will start off by telling you that there is better news on Rodrigo Possebon, last night it looked like the challenge by Pogatetz had left him with a broken leg, but I can tell you that, that isn't the case. Manchester United have confirmed this morning that Rodrigo Possebon has NOT broken his leg. United will now have to assess to see if it is a ligament injury.

Now to the match. When I first saw the team line-ups I was surprised when I saw Ben Amos' name down, Ronaldo started, which wasnt a surprise.
United started off at a great pace, just like we did against Chelsea on sunday, Welbeck caused a few problems in the first minute when he almost got in on Giggs' cross.
Throughout the night there was some fantastic interplay by the United players and they looked alot sharper than previous games.
We didn't have to wait long to see Ronaldo's first goal of the season, 25 minutes in he scored from Giggs' corner.
Three minutes later and Anderson was causing problems in the Middlesbrough penalty area when his ball in fell to a few United players but it wasnt put into the back of the net. To make it a bit more clearer (hopefully) it looked like they were playing ping pong, quite how the ball was kept out of the back of the net, I don't know.

Amos was making his Manchester United debut and he didn't have to touch the ball intil the 32nd minute when he comfortably saved Wheaters effort.
Middlesbrough, at this point, grew a bit in confidence but their next two shots were awful, the first one came when Anderson messed up a clearance, O'Neil fed Digard and Digard skewed his shot horribly off target. The next Boro shot was even worse, Alves decided to have a shot from 25 yards out and it ended up around 25 yards wide.

41 minutes in and there was probably the best move of the game which in my opinion deserved a goal- Nani slipped the ball into R. da Silva, he backheeled the ball into Welbeck who found Ronaldo. Ronaldo had a shot which was just saved by Jones.

Half time and in my opinion Man United thoroughly deserved the lead but it was still only 1-0.

Welbeck had a chance straight at the beginning of the second half but Jones saved down to his right. Nani had a shot aswell, it was brilliant play, he cut inside but Jones smothered the ball.
56 minutes in and Boro scored to make it 1-1. Johnson's first time volley took a slight deflection off Wes Brown and it went past Amos. I don't know if it was going in anyway before it took a deflection off Brown.
Ronaldo stayed on for an hour and Sir Alex Ferguson took him off and replaced him with Tevez.
64 minutes in and in came a horrible tackle from Pogatetz on Rodrigo Possebon. Possebon needed oxygen on the pitch and he was on the field for quite sometime, this resulted in 9 minutes of stoppage time at the end, which I think is a record for Manchester United- dont hold me too it though.
That tackle resulted in a straight red card for Pogatetz, I would like to say though that I don't think that Pogatetz went into that challenge to deliberatly injure Possebon.

Darren Gibson came on for Possebon and he had a chance to score straight away, it was a powerful effort which just went over the bar.
With Middlesbrough down to ten men it was just going to be one way traffic.
79 minutes in and Manchester United took the lead again when a defensive mistake let in Giggs and he scored past Jones.
This is the first time since Wigan that Manchester United scored more that one goal in a match.
9 minutes until full time and Giggs had a cheeky effort, Tevez had a fantastic run and Giggs jot a shot from the outside of his foot which went past Jones but luckily for Boro, Wheater was there to head it off the line.

7 minutes left and there was another debut, Manucho came on for Giggs.
Tevez had a shot which looked like it was going in but Hoyte was on the line to head it over.
United had been moaned at recently for sitting back on a lead but that wasn't happening tonight.
Darren Gibson had a shot which just went past the post, Manucho also had a brilliant chance but he blazed his shot wide, it was at a tight angle.

Like I said earlier, 9 minutes were added on and three minutes into the nine added on, Nani got a goal when Wheater badly under hit his backpass to Jones, which let Nani in and he nipped round Jones to score and make it 3-1 to Manchester United.

Fulltime came and we are now into the next round for the first time in two seasons.
Great performance by United and hopefully we can carry it into saturdays match against Bolton.
