Champions League Preview: Wolfsburg vs Man United

Tonight Man United face Wolfsburg in their final group stage match of this year’s Champions League. Man United have already qualified but a win will guarantee top spot, Wolfsburg need a win to guarantee qualification.

Man United have been hit by a load of injuries, mainly in defence. There is only one recognised first team defender in the squad- Patrice Evra. It was confirmed yesterday that defenders John O’Shea and Jonny Evans will be out until January. So we are without defenders Evans, O’Shea, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael da Silva, Fabio da Silva, Gary Neville and Wes Brown.

Also added onto the injury list and doubts for this Saturday’s game against Aston Villa are Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov. Owen Hargreaves and Edwin Van Der Sar are still out. Ryan Giggs and Federico Macheda didn’t travel. I am not sure why Macheda hasn’t travelled but I don’t think he is injured.

Who did travel out to Germany?

Five youngsters travelled to Germany, unless you are a Man United fan, you probably won’t even have heard of them. Out of the five, chief executive David Gill’s son (Oliver) travelled. Along with Oliver Gill, Cameron Stewart, Magnus Eikrem, Matty James and Oliver Norwood travelled.

There is no Ritchie De Laet in the squad because it was confirmed that he is ineligible for the competition, which is exactly what we need when we are low on defenders.

Here is the full 19-man Man United squad: Tomasz Kuszczak, Ben Foster, Patrice Evra, Oliver Gill, Gabriel Obertan, Magnus Eikrem, Paul Scholes, Darron Gibson, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Matty James, Darren Fletcher, Ji-sung Park, Anderson, Cameron Stewart, Nani, Oliver Norwood, Michael Owen and Danny Welbeck.

Today’s game is important but we have already qualified so the main game that Sir Alex Ferguson will be thinking about is the Premier League one against Aston Villa this weekend.

Michael Carrick will probably play in defence along with Patrice Evra, Oliver Gill and maybe Darren Fletcher or Darron Gibson.

I wouldn’t surprised to see Nani and Park start. Nani hasn’t played for a long time and we haven’t seen much of Park due to an injury. Sir Alex might go with a bit of experience in midfield and start Scholes. Upfront, maybe Owen will get a start alongside Welbeck.

Predicted starting XI- Foster, Fletcher, Carrick, Gill, Evra, Nani, Gibson, Scholes, Park, Owen and Welbeck.

Predicted scoreline- Wolfsburg 1-1 Man United.
