Wayne Rooney Named On Award Shortlist

Football - Manchester United v Bayern Munich UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is the favourite to win the PFA player of the year award after being named in the shortlist. Rooney has been named along with Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez.

Rooney has been United’s main man this season scoring 34 goals, which in turn has lead to many saying that United are a one-man team.

PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor said: “Wayne has been absolutely phenomenal once again and, in his new role this season, has created even more havoc for opposition defences. When Cristiano Ronaldo was at United, he played more of a supporting role, but as the number one striker and goalscorer he is now one of the best in the world, not just in this country.

"He has always been prepared to work at all aspects of his game, and this season in particular, the improvement in his heading ability has been there for all to see. He’s like a modern-day Dixie Dean.”

Rooney has also been nominated for the PFA young player of the year. Aston Villa’s James Milner, Fabregas and Man City’s on loan keeper Joe Hart have also been named as the candidates for the award.
