After Sundays miserable performance by Liverpool, Manchester United have to rely on some final day heroics by Wigan at Stamford Bridge.
United need Wigan to draw or beat Chelsea, if they do that and we beat Stoke then Man United will win a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has assured Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United that Wigan will go down to London and give their best.
Many have heavily criticized Liverpool’s pathetic, disgraceful performance against Chelsea. If Man United do win the Premier League this season, they will overtake Liverpool’s record of 18 League titles, which they obviously don’t want.
Ahead of the probable title deciding crash Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said that his wouldn’t be an issue. The Liverpool players wouldn’t be thinking about the possibility of United winning a 19th title, they would be professional but that obviously wasn’t the case.
Wigan on the other hand may not be fighting for fourth or fighting to save their Premier League status but they do have an incentive. If Wigan beat Chelsea, they could move up to 14th position and earn an extra £750,000.
Martinez told the BBC: "We will prepare in the best possible manner as we know it is a tough place to go.”
"But I can guarantee everyone that we will give our best."
"We know that not many people will expect us to go there and get a result."
"But this season we have shown that on our day we can go and get a result against anyone. We will enjoy the experience because for our young players it will be a unique moment.
"If we can do the double then that would be some achievement and I think the players are ready for that sort of challenge."
Most people don’t expect Wigan to get a result at Stamford Bridge, me included, but there is a lot of pressure on Chelsea and they didn’t play that well against Liverpool.
Whatever happens United can be proud of what they have done this season. United lost their best player and the Worlds greatest player in Cristiano Ronaldo. Throughout the season there have been many injuries, mainly in defence and at one point midfielders Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher had to play in defence.
Chelsea are a point ahead of United going into the final day of the season, with United facing Stoke at Old Trafford. The only guarantee this weekend is that we will find out who the English Premier League Champions for the 2009/10 season are.
