Roma v Manchester United Review

Before the Champion’s League match against United tonight, they had only lost one match at home all season, which was against Inter Milan.
This was the fifth time United and Roma have met in around a year. This time last season Roma won the match 2-1, but United thrashed Roma 7-1 at Old Trafford.
Earlier in this seasons group stages of the Champion’s League, United and Roma faced each other, the first match was at Old Trafford which United won 1-0 with a Rooney goal. The last match of the group stages saw United travel to Rome but we had already qualified so it wasn’t important, that match finished a 1-1 draw.
What we really needed from tonight was a win and a clean sheet, an important away goal could be key in this tough stage of the competition.
First Half
Roma came straight at United but they didn’t really pose a great threat at the United goal. Roma started the better team and we needed to settle into the match. Freekicks were being given away and Ronaldo was being fouled which meant he was getting frustrated.
Then came the moment when Vidic was injured, it looked like he had twisted his knee. Vidic was straight to his feet when he saw the stretcher, he even wanted to come back on,
But it wasn’t worth making the injury worse.
With Vidic off I thought that United might have been a bit shaken up with the injury but the defence stood strong.
Not long after Vidic’s injury came the first of two United goals. It was a fantastic header by Ronaldo. He basically came flying out of nowhere and scored the goal. Once Ronaldo had scored, there was a bit of the heart in mouth moment. Ronaldo hadn’t got back upto the ground, which suggested that he had an injury.
Ronaldo did get back upto his feet and he was fine. It was a bit of a fall, landing back onto the ground and he had probably just winded himself.
At the end of the first half both Anderson and Pizarro received yellow cards, Anderson had persistently been fouling the Roma players.
Second Half
Roma came flying out of the blocks in the second half and United’s defence needed to stay strong, which they did. United still hadn’t had a corner and Roma were onto their eighth.
Van Der Sar made a spectacular reflex save to keep United 1-0 up. Ronaldo was still being fouled but he kept on getting back up and doing what he does best.
Hargreaves was brought on and Rooney was moved into the middle to take United into a 4-4-2 formation, which really worked for us.
Just after the change of formation came our second goal. Rooney scored the second after Doni couldn’t quite grab the ball.
After the second goal, Roma’s heads went down and United looked a lot more comfortable.
We had a couple more chances to make it 3-0 but we go into the second leg next Wednesday 2-0 up and hopefully going into the semi final’s of the Champion’s League possibly against Barcelona who beat Schalke 1-0 away, so that is an away goal for them.

Overall: It was a great performance by United and lets keep it up
