Should Football Be Worried About Terrorism?

After the horrible terrorist attack on the Sri Lanken Cricket players and staff, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has said that he is surprised that there hasn't been an attack on football. I must say that I am surprised too, I and many others thought that something might happen during Euro 2008 or the Champion's League final in May. Thankfully nothing did happen but there are possibilities that it could.

In no way do I agree with terrorism, yes they may want to get their points across and cause destruction but killing innocent people is wrong and a disgrace.
Many thought that cricketers were safe because they were seen as massive stars, even bigger that movie stars, so why would someone want to hurt them?

I don't think football is safe from terrorism, no where is safe. Do we need to step up security. Currently (as Wenger kindly pointed out) in England, the football teams don't get any police escorts. Manchester United currently employ a private security team to protect the players and staff.

If terrorists really wanted to make a point then they could go after teams such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan because they have huge fan bases and people would be shocked and incredibly angry if anything happens to the players.

Wenger said: We don't regard ourselves as terror targets but you wonder why not,"

"It has happened to us, where we have had alerts before games that we played at home."

He added: "We kept quiet about it. I wonder about this because in England, you don't get any police escort before games - they refuse, especially in London.

"I remember when I was in Japan (in the mid 1990's), I had this problem as well because we had at that stage somebody who had all the machinery and they put sarin gas into the subway."

My question is: Do we need to step up security in the United Kingdom? Unless you have armed officers there is not much normal policeman can do anyway.
