Manchester United's Journey To Rome

CAPTION CORRECTION....Changing to Manchester Uniteds Wayne Rooney....Football - FC Porto v Manchester United UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg

Tomorrow Manchester United take on Barcelona in the Champion’s League final, here is a look back at how Man United got themselves to the final.

Unlike Barcelona, Man United didn’t have to play in the qualifying rounds and we went into the Champion’s League at the group stages. Man United were drawn in a group with Aalborg BK, Villarreal and Celtic.

We first played against Villarreal at Old Trafford, the game finished 0-0. Late September we travelled out to Denmark to play Aalborg, Wayne Rooney opened up the scoring, Dimitar Berbatov scored two late goals and we went away 3-0 victors.
Our third group stage game was at home against Celtic in which we also won 3-0.
Half an hour in and Berbatov scored the opening goal, this was followed by his second goal, four in two matches in the Champion’s League. Rooney scored Man United’s third and final goal.
Our fourth match was against Celtic again, this time we went to Celtic Park. Scott McDonald put Celtic ahead 13 minutes in, luckily for United Ryan Giggs pulled back a late equaliser, the game finished 1-1.
Our fifth Champion’s League match was away to Villarreal at El Madrigal. Yet again we drew 0-0 with Villarreal.
Our final group stage match was against Aalborg at Old Trafford. Man United got an early opening goal thanks to Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez slotted the ball into the back of the net. Jakobsen flicked the ball past Kuszczak to give Aalborg an equaliser, that was followed by another Aalborg goal and this time it was Curth who put the ball past Kuszczak. Man United got another late equaliser, this time Rooney scored and the game finished 2-2.

Man United finished top of their group.

We were then drawn against one of the Champion’s League favourites, Inter Milan. The first leg was played at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the game finished 0-0. United didn’t get an away goal. One goal from Inter Milan at Old Trafford could have lead to a disaster.
Man United won the second leg 2-0 with goals from defender Nemanja Vidic and midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo.

Up next came the quarter-finals. On paper we had one of the easier quarter-final ties which was against Porto, that wasn’t the case.
We played at home first in a dramatic game. Rodriguez got Porto an early away goal, after that Bruno Alves carelessly passed the ball back to his keeper but Rooney was there to take the ball and slot it past the keeper.
Man United got a late winner thanks to Tevez but that wasn’t the end of things. 89 minutes in Mariano got Porto a late second away goal, the game finished 2-2. This meant that Man United had to do what no other English team has done- win at Estadio do Dragao.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored one of the goals of the season from 40 yards out to give United a 1-0 away victory.

Semi-final time and we were set to play English team Arsenal.
The first leg was played at Old Trafford, Man United battered Arsenal but only finished with a 1-0 victory thanks to John O’Shea. Were Man United going to pay for missing their chances?
Man United went down to the Emirates Stadium full of confidence and that showed. Ji-Sung Park put Man United ahead with an away goal only eight minutes in when Arsenal’s young defender Kieran Gibbs slipped.
Three minutes later Ronaldo got Man United’s second away goal with another one of his freekicks.
61 minutes in and Ronaldo got his second of the game, this gave Man United their third away goal and a 4-0 aggregate lead.
76 minutes in and there was a controversial moment. Darren Fletcher superbly tackled Cesc Fabregas in the penalty area, the referee showed Fletcher a red (which means that he misses the final) and Robin Van Persie put in the penalty for Arsenal. The match finished 3-1 to Man United, 4-1 on aggregate.
