Much talk before yesterday's game against Valencia was who was going to be in the Man United team? With Edwin Van Der Sar being injured who would replace him, and would Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney start upfront for the first time in a Man United shirt together?
The starting XI for Man United was- Ben Foster, Ritchie de Laet, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Zoran Tosic, Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen.
Before the game kicked off, injured Van Der Sar received his award for the most clean sheets last season- the golden glove award. We also had a minutes applause to remember Sir Bobby Robson.
The game got off to a good start, the first chance of the game fell to Valencia's David Villa but the shot was wild. Minutes after that Man United had their first chance of the game which should have been a goal. Rooney received the ball from de Laet but the shot went wide.
England manager Fabio Capello was in the crowd and Owen was eager to please but it turned out to be a bit of a disaster. Owen's first great chance was headed over the bar.
Owen had his second chance not long after that when Rooney split Valencia's defence, he got the ball to Owen who chipped the ball which went inches wide. Great move by United, should have ended in a goal.
The game wasn't one sided and Valencia nearly took the lead when they hit the bar, it was still 0-0 though. Man United went straight down the other end and there was yet another chance for Owen, the goalkeeper parried the ball away.
Throughout the first half and what he was playing in the second, de Laet really did impress. The teams went in at 0-0 at half time, not quite sure how we hadn't had a goal.
Second half substitutions for Man United were Tomasz Kuszczak on replacing Foster. Tom Cleverley on, he replaced Tosic and John O'Shea on replaced Evans. Valencia made 10 substitutions.
It wasn't just de Laet who was impressing, A.Valencia was also impressing. He had a much more impressive second half.
Kuszczak was only on for a few minutes and he already had to do more than Foster had, the first save he managed to tip over the bar for a corner. It was a great save.
Owen had more chances in the second half but it just wasn't going his way, I think he was too eager to impress the fans and Capello.
The first goal came when A.Valencia took on players down Man United's right, he crossed the ball in and Rooney was there to header it into the back of the net. It was a brilliant ball in by Valencia and that is why Sir Alex Ferguson bought him.
We had finally got a goal and we nearly got a second when A.Valencia was tackled inside the box, the loose ball fell to Owen who (as you can probably guess) shot wide. A.Valencia was showing off his pace and I hadn't realised how fast he is.
Valencia were down to 10 men for a little while after one of their players were injured and the only substitution left was a goalkeeper, he did come on later and he played in midfield.
Man United made more substitution's. Anderson, Fabio Da Silva, Darron Gibson, Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda all came on. Rooney, Owen, Carrick, de Laet and Fletcher all came off.
Silva (who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford) showed what he had in him when he fired a powerful shot but Kuszczak was equal to it.
The game had started to slow down a bit and become a bit scrappy when United scored their second of the match. A.Valencia provided another ball into the box which rebounded to Cleverley who had all the time in the world (not literally) to score and he did. He scored infront of the Stretford end and he looked totally made up.
With 10 minutes to go, Sir Alex brought Luis Nani on and took Valencia off, the crowd quite rightly gave him a standing ovation. With minutes to go United should have gone 3-0 up, with some good work from Macheda gave Gibson a chance to shoot, he did and the ball hit the crossbar.
The match finished 2-0 to United, it was probably United's most entertaining match of pre-season and it was great to see the team back at Old Trafford. de Laet, Rooney and A.Valencia all had good games for United, on the other hand poor old Owen didn't.
