Carling Cup Review- Barnsley 0-2 Manchester United

Man United are through to the final eight and one step closer retaining the Carling Cup after beating Barnsley 2-0. United were down to 10-men for half and hour after Gary Neville was sent of for a high challenge with his studs showing.

Sir Alex made 11 changes to the side who lost to Liverpool last Sunday. The starting XI was- Ben Foster, Gary Neville, Jonny Evans, Fabio da Silva, Wes Brown, Gabriel Obertan, Anderson, Rafael da Silva, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda and Michael Owen.

Both teams started really well, it looked like it could have been a great game. Six minutes in, Man United took the lead when Welbeck headed in Anderson’s corner. After that, Barnsley chances but it was comfortable for United.

United could have gone 2-0 up but Barnsley keeper Luke Steele kept out shots from Welbeck and Obertan.

Barnsley’s Bogdanovic headed the ball, which hit the post, after that Stephen Foster headed the ball twice off target.

Owen picked up the ball inside Barnsley’s penalty area, he then put the ball through a defenders legs and knocked the ball into the back of the net from 16 yards out.

United had to play half an hour of the game with 10 men after Gary Neville. Neville initially got the ball but his follow through caught Hammill just below the knee.

Man United kept hold of the 2-0 scoreline and that is how it finished. It was great for Foster to keep a clean sheet, hopefully this is the start of many.

The game has been marred by crowd trouble, which ended in 10 fans being arrested.

Terrified catering staff had to barricade themselves inside a food kiosk for 25 minutes whilst the fans took money out of the tills and trashed the place.
Fans also through bottles onto the pitch and stewards and a few stupid Barnsley fans thought it was funny and clever to run on the pitch by Foster. What if the fans had a knife? It really isn’t funny.
