United Beat Arsenal To The Signing Of Welsh Youngster

Apparently Man United have beaten Arsenal to the signing of Cardiff’s Welsh star Adam Matthews. It is believed that the 17-year old will complete his move to Man United when the transfer window opens in January.

It is also thought United are paying £5 million for the full=back who has so far made 12 Championship starts for Cardiff. United will pay Cardiff more money, the further he progresses at United.

What do we know about Matthews?

Not only is he a talented footballer, he was also a talented rugby player. So much so, the Osprey’s Rugby Union side followed him.

Matthews did have a trial at Swansea City, unfortunately he broke his arm and by the time he recovered, Swansea’s academy was full.

Matthews then went on to have a trial at Cardiff City (Swansea’s rivals) and he signed an academy contract with Cardiff at the age of eight.

In January 2009, after impressing, Matthews signed a professional contract with Cardiff.

On the 15th August 2009 Matthews made his full first team debut for Cardiff when he came on for Paul Quinn during the 1-1 draw with Blackpool.

On the 3rd October 2009 Matthews scored his first goal for the first team during Cardiff’s 4-0 thrashing of Watford. Goalkeeper Scott Loach misjudged Matthew’s freekick from 50 yards out.

Matthews has also played for his country. So far he has made nine appearances for Wales U17’s, two for Wales U19’s and one for Wales U21’s.
