Wayne Rooney aggravated a knee injury whilst playing for England last Wednesday. As a result he missed yesterday’s 1-0 win over Wolves and he could miss this Wednesday’s vital second leg Champions League match against AC Milan.
Rooney has been United’s main man this season and during some parts of yesterday’s game it was blatantly obvious that we were missing him.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It wasn't looking good from when he got back on Thursday - his knee was swollen.”
"He's a doubt for Wednesday now, which is a bigger problem for us."
After United’s Carling Cup win over Aston Villa, Rooney did go for a scan on his knee days later he was playing a friendly for England at Wembley, the pitch is apparently to blame.
"Wayne is very doubtful for Wednesday," Sir Alex said. "The Wembley pitch has killed him."
If we are without Rooney on Wednesday who could replace him?
United are definitely without Michael Owen who is out for the rest of the season. Federico Macheda has only just returned to training, I believe that the match on Wednesday could be a little too early for him. Danny Welbeck is out on loan at Preston, which leaves us with Dimitar Berbatov and Mame Biram Diouf.
We could go 4-5-1 with Berbatov up front or we could go 4-4-2 with both Diouf and Berbatov up front. Berbatov didn’t do that well leading the line on his own against Wolves and Diouf didn’t have his shooting boots on when he came on as a sub. So in other words, I hoping that Rooney is fit and can start.
