Today Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo was extremely close to signing to Arsenal and that United only signed him because of their connections to Sporting Lisbon (the club Ronaldo was at when United signed him).

Wenger said: "He (Cristiano Ronaldo) was here much earlier - he could tell you that if he wants.
"Manchester United had a partnership with Sporting Lisbon when United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz moved and that made it very difficult."
"I knew about him yes. We were very close."
"I don't want to create any story that isn't needed," Wenger told BBC football correspondent Jonathan Legard.
"One day I will tell you more about that story and you will be surprised. You will have to ask him how close it was."

Why has Arsene decided to bring this up now? Anyway i bet he is gutted that he didnt get him, missing out on the worlds best player.
