Manchester United Progress, Spurs Fall

Sports News - January 24, 2009

The game at Old Trafford saw the two most successful sides in the history of the competition come head to head
Much talk before the match was which teams are the managers going to send out? Both managers have injury problems but the team line-ups were strong.

Manchester United handed a debut to Fabio and in the second half Tosic was also given his debut.

Tottenham opened up the scoring in the fifth minute with a well worked goal when Pavlyuchenko headed in Huddlestone's cross which left Foster flat footed and unable to do anything. It was Vidic that was marking Pavlychenko but Vidic was left flat footed.

From then on the match was mainly player on Tottenham's side of the pitch, Tevez hit the crossbar and the goalie Alnwick had to make a few good saves.
We may have had all the possession but Spurs put up a barrier and it took a bit of luck to get our opening game.

36 minutes in, Carrick pulled Man United's corner back to Scholes, who wasn't picked up and had a free shot, the ball went through a load of bodies and it took a deflection off Huddlestone which put the ball past the keeper.

A minute or two later, Carrick had opened up Tottenham's defence with a fantastic ball through to Berbatov who shot at the goal early and it went past the goalie's right hand side and into the back of the net.

After the first half action it looked like the match could become a classic cup tie but the second half was far from a classic cup tie, United had the possession and Spurs were happy to put up a barrier to keep United out.

Danny Welbeck grew in confidence on the right and kept the ball well whilst the other players caught up. Fabio looked like he could become a world class player, I was really impressed, the problem we are going to have is spotting the difference between Fabio and Rafael.

Carlos Tevez was fantastic during the match again, constantly working and putting pressure on the Spurs players which drew mistakes out of them.

Tottenham did have one or two chances, Bale outpaced O'Shea in the first half and hit the ball into the side netting, Bentley had a shot in the second half which hit the side netting.

Unfortunately United suffered a few injuries, Fabio limped off and so did Welbeck, there hasn't been any news on Fabio's but Welbeck is expected to be fit for Tuesday's match.
Ronaldo also left the pitch early and that was down to an illness which he had woken up with but he still played a part in the match.

Tottenham didn't really put much pressure onto United until the last few minutes of the match which were slightly nervy and I was releaved when the fulltime whistle went.
