Champion's League Review: Beskitas 0-1 Man United

Last night, Man United got their Champion’s League campaign off to a great start after a 1-0 win over Besiktas out in Turkey. Paul Scholes redeemed himself after a red card sending off on Saturday with a great header to earn United three points in a very intimidating Inonu Stadium.

We were all expecting a couple of the first team XI to be rested because of the Manchester derby on Sunday but I didn’t expect the team that he put out. The starting XI was- Ben Foster, Gary Neville, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic, Luis Nani, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, Antonio Valencia, Oliveira Anderson and Wayne Rooney.

Man United knew that it was going to be a very hostile 90 minutes and that is exactly what we saw. There was constant noise throughout the match, which was only turned down a notch when United scored in the 76th minute.

Rooney started off on his own upfront but Valencia had a great first half- he was just skipping past the left back every time he had the ball.

During the first half, Rooney and Carrick both had long-range chances- Rooney’s went just wide and the keeper saved Carrick’s.

Vidic did have a half chance but nothing that really troubled the keeper. Besiktas’ main opportunity of the first half came when Serdar Ozkan ran at United’s defence, had a shot from 22-yards out and luckily it took a slight deflection off Evans.

Rooney wasn’t having the best of times upfront so Sir Alex decided to bring him and Carrick off and Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov came on. Whilst coming off Rooney had a bit of a tantrum, he first exchanged a few choice words with the Besiktas fans and then took his boots off his feet and threw them on the ground.

United’s goal came in the 76th minute which was such a relief. The keeper blocked Nani’s powerful shot but it went straight to Scholes who put it into the back of the net.

Besiktas were proving to be a tough team to break down; they kept quite a few played behind he ball, which meant that they were never really a threat down the other end.

It did seem like Man United had most of the possession throughout the game but the statistics after showed that Man United had 53.6% of the possession and Besiktas had 46.4%.

Man United had five shots on target, Beskitas had one.
Besiktas had five off target and United had 10 shots off target.
Besiktas had nine corners compared to Man United’s four. Finally, Besiktas committed 12 fouls and United committed 10.

The police did have to eject a Besiktas fan that was aiming a laser at Evans.
Talking about the incident after the match, Sir Alex said:

"It was in the first half, although thankfully the police did something about it"
"They managed to get the culprit, which is good because I noticed it particularly on Jonny Evans. It seemed to be on him all the time."
