Premier League Review: Stoke City 0-2 Manchester United

Ahead of yesterday’s game between Man United and Stoke, I was slightly anxious. Last season Burnley had only lost four games at home and they had recently played Chelsea who only managed to get a last minute winner. Was it going to be too close for comfort? The answer to that is no!

Man United got off to a good start, we kept possession and early on we could have had a penalty. Paul Scholes shot from outside the penalty area hit Liam Lawrence’s hand, which was up, but I think it would have been slightly harsh, I have seen them given though.

Former Man United defender Ryan Shawcross mucked up at the back which put Antonio Valencia clean through on goal but Valencia somehow managed to shoot wide. Rooney was there next to him so if he wanted too he could have passed and I don’t think Rooney would have missed.

Man United had another good chance to score in the first half, we broke away from a Stoke corner with Rooney, and he got the ball to Luis Nani inside our half. Nani ran at the Stoke defender, he had Berbatov alongside him but he decided to cut in on his left and hit a really high shot.

Not long after that, Nani did have a shot, which was on target and drew out a good save from the goalkeeper. United were passing the ball round the penalty area trying to find an opening, finally Nani got the ball, ran in a bit on his right and his shot was on target and it wasn’t a bad shot.

Second half and the turning point for Man United was when Nani was brought off and Ryan Giggs was brought on.

Man United’s first goal came in the 62nd minute when Paul Scholes got the ball to Darren Fletcher. Fletcher put the ball through to Giggs and he set up Dimitar Berbatov who could easily tap it into the back of the net. All the players, including Berbatov, ran to Giggs to celebrate, appreciating what he has done.

Man United’s second goal came from a Giggs free kick in the 77th minute and it was an unlikely suspect who got the goal. Giggs ball in was met by the head of defender John O’Shea and the ball flew past the stoke keeper and into the far corner of the goal.

After setting up two goals it would have been good to see Giggs get one and he did have his chances. Ferdinand got the ball just inside the Stoke half and he hit it to Berbatov. Berbatov knocked the ball of to Scholes who put Giggs through on goal but the keeper came out fast enough to put Giggs of and the ball went over the bar.
He was so close to his 150th goal for Man United.

We dominated possession, we had chances and we scored two goals. Overall I am happy with that but I am slightly worried about Nani. When he joined us he came with the fans expecting a lot from him but ever since joining us, he hasn’t had the best of times. Nani was infruirating today and he is with most matches that he plays in, I don’t know how many more chances he is going to be given.

On the other hand, Ryan Giggs!
What can I say about Giggs? He has been superb so far this season, every year people write him off, saying he is too old but he has shown them. He changed the game and he is the reason that we won it.

Chelsea lost at Wigan 3-1, which means that we are now top of the table on goal difference.
