Man United Injury Update Ahead Of Chelsea Clash

It is Friday morning and Sir Alex Ferguson has finished his pre-match news conference. There is a bit of good news on the injury front ahead of the all important game between Man United and Chelsea this Sunday.

Sports News - January 11, 2009

After missing the midweek 3-3 draw against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov are fit to play on Sunday. United’s defence was rocky on Tuesday but it now looks like we will have Vidic and Jonny Evans in central defence.

Sir Alex did confirm the news that we have all been expecting, Rio Ferdinand is nowhere near returning from injury and there is no date for his comeback.

Other injury news- Owen Hargreaves is 10 days away from returning to full first team training and Ji-Sung Park is still out with a knee injury.

"Vidic has trained for the last three days and he should be OK for Sunday," Ferguson said at the press conference. "Berbatov got knock and we’ll see what he’s like in training today but he should be OK.

"Rio and Park are both out and Gary is suspended of course. Other than that, the rest are fit and we’re ready for a big game."

Talking about Ferdinand, Sir Alex said: "We don’t know where the calf injury is coming from. It could be the lower back”
"A calf injury usually means two to three weeks out. But there’s no sign of recovery from that injury.

"We’re looking at whether it’s coming from his back, but in the meantime he’s out. There has been no improvement, so obviously we’re looking at something different."

There was a bit of good news on long-term absentee Hargreaves: "He’s been doing some good football work with our physios”.
"Hopefully we'll get him back in the next 10 days into our training. But we’re not going to force it. Being out a year is a long time.

"He is very happy within himself, which is good, so hopefully we can get him back soon."
