It is believed that the Premier League are looking into introducing a play-off system to decide which team will take the fourth Champions League spot. Teams as low as 7th place could end up playing against other clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan, if they win the play-offs.
This system could be introduced as early as next season.
I don’t agree with play offs at all. I believe that the top three teams should be promoted; the three worst should be relegated. Using the Premier League as an example, we don’t see the clubs who finish 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th having a play off match to see who is relegated.
The clubs who are the best and worst of over a season should be promoted, relegated or play in the Champions League. I believe that is what is fair. The three worst clubs over a season will be relegated so why can’t the four best teams over a season play in the Champions league, or the three best be promoted?
I can see what the Premier League is trying to do but I don’t believe this is the right way. Many supporters of the teams who aren’t in the top four are bored of Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool always playing in the Champions League. I can understand this but over a season these are the top four teams. Manchester City now have the money and have a good chance of finishing in a Champions League spot, next season. Aston Villa, Everton and Tottenham are also close, Liverpool aren’t improving so there is a good chance of that happening without the league having to help them out.
I am not saying this just on the off chance that United finish fourth but I just don’t agree with it. I would be saying exactly the same thing if Man United weren’t a top team, maybe a 5th 6th or 7th placed team, because the other clubs did better over the season so they deserve it.
I really do understand that other fans would love to see their team play in the competition but is this really the right way to go about it?
