Yet Another 0-0 Draw

Football - Villarreal v Manchester United UEFA Champions League Group Stage Matchday Five Group E
Before last night Manchester United and Villarreal had played each other three times and those three matches ALL finished in a 0-0 draw so we shouldn't really have expected anything else.

There was a starting place for youngster Jonny Evans who has been looking good when he has played for United so far this season and it looked like an attacking Manchester United when you look at the starting line-up (4-3-3):

Kuszczak; Evra, Ferdinand, Evans, O'Shea; Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson; Nani, Rooney and Ronaldo.

All United and Villarreal needed last night was a draw to put them both through to the next round of the Champion's League but we really wanted the win because that would put us top of the group.

In the first half it looked like Ronaldo was frustrated and wound up from the start and it did show a bit in the 7th minute. Ronaldo went down to ground just outside the penalty area and there was a little scuffle between Ronaldo and Ibagaza. Replays showed that Ibagaza had dug his nails into Ronaldo's neck.

Rooney did have a goal disallowed but Evra was ruled out for offside which at the time I didn't think was right but I have seen it again and the lines-man was correct.

Villarreal did have a good chance in the first half but Kuszczak managed to block the ball and it was dealt with but it was a distance shot which was what they were reduced to.

Second half and United had some more chances which were either dealt with by the keeper or too high or wide. Anderson was having a few chances but he still hasn't got his first Manchester United goal which can't be too far away and he is getting closer.

Cristiano Ronaldo also had a fantastic shot at goal but the goalie got his fingertips on it which pushed it up onto the bar and it was still 0-0.

83 minutes in and Villarreal were down to 10 men when Capdevila was shown a straight red card for a tackle which caught Ronaldo around the knee. I have to admit that when Ronaldo went down to ground and started rolling around most people (including me) thought that he was making the most of it but after seeing the challenge again it was a nasty challenge and deserved the red.

The match finished 0-0 which took both teams to the next round. Aalborg beat Celtic 2-1 which means that Aalborg will finish in the UEFA Cup spot and Celtic have been knocked out of Europe.
