Man United Beat Sorry Looking Chelsea

What a weekend it has been for Man United, first Rafa Benitez made everyone laugh on Friday, then Liverpool drew 0-0 against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium and finally we thumped Chelsea 3-0 yesterday at Old Trafford.

I said in the preview of this match that the games between Man United and Chelsea have a massive build up and normally turn out to be a boring stalemate but it was far from that yesterday.

I wouldn't say that it was a fantastic match and well worth watching because it wasn't, United didn't really step out of second gear but there were a few talking points.

The first came before the match even started and that was Sir Alex's line-up. Giggs was chosen over Carrick which was a surprise to many and Neville was chosen over Rafael who like Nani wasn't even on the bench. These selections were proven to be correct, both Neville and Giggs had great games and showed exactly why they are still in the Manchester United team.

Another surprise was the absence of Rio Ferdinand, during the week Fergie had said that he would be fit and ready to start the match, after the game Fergie did say that Ferdinand was going to play but he woke up with a back spasm and will now go for a scan today.

Throughout the first half we had a few chances but it looked like we were going to go into half time at 0-0 but that didn't happen. During the first 45 minutes Chelsea defended OK and we had a few shots but nothing good enough to get past Cech.

The main talking point happened just before half time when United were awarded a corner. Rooney took the ball to the corner flag, he rolled it in with his foot, stopped it (not taking his foot off the ball) and rolled it back out and walked away. Giggs jogged past Rooney and apparently Rooney told Giggs that he had already taken it. Giggs took the ball and floated in a great cross and Ronaldo was there to put it into the back of the net, but it was ruled out.

The goal wasn't ruled out because of pushing or an offside but I think that the linesman hadn't noticed what Rooney had done which is a shame because it was a well worked corner.

Fortunately United did score from the re-taken corner when Berbatov flicked the ball onto Vidic, who scored in the 45th minute and I think that it gave United a deserved lead going into the break.

We had a lead but I was thinking that Chelsea would have come out all guns blazing for a goal making it alot harder for us but they didn't look interested. They were alot easier to beat than Stoke were at the Britannia Stadium the other week.

Rooney got Man United's second in the 63rd minute when he got onto the end of Evra's great ball in, into the penalty area. It was a great cross in by Evra but it was also bad defending by Chelsea.
Chelsea didn't mark Evra who was able to get a cross in when he received the ball from Ronaldo's flick Evra's ball went past John Terry who looked like he ducked it and it also went past Ashley Cole who I think should have done something with it but he left it and Rooney was there to give United a 2-0 lead.

Berbatov got the third and final goal when he was found by Ronaldo's freekick. This gave Man United a 3-0 win and that is a thrashing.

The only bad news to have come out of the game is that Evra limped off with an injury.

It has now been 762 minutes since Man United conceded a goal in the Premier League, next up is Wigan at Old Trafford.

One Response so far.
