Stalemate At The San Siro

Inter v Manchester United

Much talk before yesterday's match between Inter Milan was whether or not United defenders Evans' and O'Shea would be fit to play, if not United could have a few problems.
Luckily Evans' and O'Shea both started and both impressed throughout the match.

Inter manager Jose Mourinho said that he expected Man United to be defensive and have to change their ways, that was not the case, it was actually Inter Milan that had to change.

The surprising team news from United was that both Rooney and Tevez started on the bench, does that mean they will start the Carling Cup final?

Three minutes in and Ronaldo was already testing the keeper, firstly with a freekick but it was comfortably saved, three minutes later he had a much better chance with a strong header which was well saved by Cesar. Two minutes later, Ronaldo's freekick went just past Cesar's post, United have been so close to getting a vital away goal.

The first chance Inter had came because of a lack of communication between Van Der Sar and Ferdinand but Zanetti's shot was deflected into Van Der Sar's arms.
A minutes later, it was United attacking again, this time with Berbatov, he managed to get behind the Inter defence but his poor ball in was poor.

United's best chance in the first half fell to Giggs'. He span past Rivas but goalie Cesar blocked Giggs' shot to give United a corner.

United had more freekicks and more chances- Ronaldo brought out another save from Cesar with a dipping freekick, Ronaldo also had a header which went just wide of the post, if it was on target, it would have been a goal.

Giggs' and Carrick dominated the midfield throughout the first half and that was why United had most of the possession and the best chances.

Inter Milan didn't really show much attacking intent in the first half, if you didn't know that they were playing in the San Siro, you would have thought that United were the home team.

The only concern I had was that Man United went into half time and I knew that Mourinho would be giving the Inter Milan players a mouthful and they definitely wouldn't be as bad as they were in the first half.

Second half and we saw a totally different Inter Milan side, they looked like they wanted to play and looked much more enthusiastic.
Two minutes into the the second half and Inter had their best chance and one of the best chances in the game.
The ball fell to Adriano but he completely miskicked the ball, he was unmarked from around 10 yards out, if he had kicked it properly, it would have been a goal.

The second half was much more even and either team could have scored, it was entertaining to watch but at the same time it was nail biting.
Inter Milan were carving out more and more half chances which lifted the crowd and gave Inter some lift in their play.

67 minutes in and United went close again, Ronaldo's low ball in was just inches in front of Park. Replays showed that in the penalty area, Berbatov was being wrestled by an Inter player, if he wasn't then Berbatov would have got the ball and it would have most likely have been a goal. That should have been a penalty to United.

With around 10 minutes to go, Rooney came on replacing Park. His first contribution to the game was to get a yellow card for a studs-up challenge on Stankovic.

One minute left of the 90 minutes and Rooney was so close, he got onto Berbatov's through ball but Cesar made a fantastic save with his foot outside the penalty area.

Three minutes of stoppage time was added on and the final kick of the game fell to Ronaldo. 25 yards out and United were given a freekick, Ronaldo got a normal Cristiano Ronaldo freekick on target, it was dipping and swerving but it was straight at Cesar who didn't know anything about it but it hit his chest.

I was incredibly disappointed that we didn't score an away goal or even win the match, which we should have done.

Man United broke another record last night, United were unbeaten in 20 consecutive Champion's League matches which is a new European record. United were currently alongside Ajax and Bayern Munich on 19 matches but we broke the record last night.
