Manchester United 2-2 Porto, Champion's League Review

What a match it was last night, I haven't seen such an open, end-to-end game in ages. Unfortunately we only came out of it with a draw and we have it all to do in Portugal but I am confident in the team that we have.

I am disappointed in the result, in all honestly it was/is a Disastrous result. We conceded two away goals and only managed a draw at home. At some points in the game, defensively we looked suicidal. After weeks of having an incredibly strong defence we look very weak which is a worry.

Porto bagged themselves a really early goal (fourth minute), you would have thought that the late Mancheda goal against Aston Villa would have given us confidence but we looked shaky for around the first half hour.

Wayne Rooney managed to get us back into the match but only because of a poor backpass from Alves which let Rooney in. The rest game stayed at 1-1 with both sides attacking each other until the 85th minutes.

85 minutes in and Tevez put Man United in front and what looked like could be the winning goal. Rooney flicked the ball towards Tevez with the bottom of his boot and Tevez finished the ball off well to give United a 2-1 lead.

The lead didn't last long, just one minute from time, Manchester United let themselves down defensively, again. Mariano was given plenty of space in the penalty area and he put the visitors level, with their second away goal.

Man United will play Porto next Wednesday, we need to win (which a team has never done against Porto at their home), if we draw 0-0, draw 1-1 or loose then we are out of the Champion's League. A 2-2 draw will take it to extra time but we have to win and we have to get Ferdinand back fit, otherwise I can only see us dropping out of the Champion's League.

if i was a united fan, thank God im not :crosseshimself: id be very worried. united have been poor in goalscoring this year but defence (?vidic) has saved them. people started bandying the term untouchables around. fergie fuelled it and the players believed it and now are looking complacent. we went to old trafford and humiliated utd, and since then teams have had a go at utd ad with good results, vidics confidence is destroyed since t orres mauled him and utd are leaking goals. the reason for this is their immobile non tracking back midfield particularly in the centre. carrick and scholes, ronaldo also dont track back so if teams attack utd at pace, the cause havoc. benitez made the recipe for beating utd. then in an interview after the utd game he told managers to look at the tapes and play the way we did at ot and you can beat utd. it has worked this far. im not saying utd will not go on and win trophies this year, they may go on and win another one but they wont win 4 or 5. they have hit a massive slump at the wrong time while liverpool have hit top form and can smell blood. if utd can regroup and hold liverpool off hats off to ye, but we only need ye to drop points in 2 more league games, which will happen, its a matter of can liverpool win our last 7 lge games, i think we will go very close atleast. i think utd will not win the cl, but i would still back them to advance. worrying times to be a utd fan to be sure. i think utd will hit form again sooner or later, heres hoping it later

Hi Ciaran, thanks for your comment, you put alot of time into it and it is appreciated.

I have personally never branded Man United as untouchable and I have never said that we will win 4-5 trophies, it is such a hard job to do.

I have been worried about the way United have been playing for weeks now and credit to Liverpool, you did do well against us and are peaking at the right time. I can't see us progressing to the next round and even if we do, I think we will be knocked out by Arsenal who I believe will beat Villarreal at the Emirates.

I don't think that we will win the FA Cup either. If I was going to make a prediction, I think we will win the Premier League alongside the Carling Cup and that will probably it.

I would also think that it will be an Arsenal vs Barcelona Champion's League final and Chelsea will win the FA Cup.

Thank you again for your comment and you seem like a nice, well grounded Liverpool fan.

A great team that rarely plays good football. Putting in crosses, defending from the front etc, all the things that everton, stoke etc do on a weekly basis seem beyond this united team.
That idiot ronaldo typifies the indiscpline. You can only get by so long on magic and you can only go to the well so many times. Fergie used to a renowned disciplinarian. Seems to have gone soft over Ronaldo and thus the bad example has been set. When you see evra taking shots at goal instead of putting the ball in to an open rooney you know that the width is pretty much gone from this team and when he strolls back while his opponents speed forward you know they won't put up much of a fight.
    Hope it changes.

    Hi Anonymous,

There is no doubting that Ronaldo has been incredibly frustrating for Man United supporters this season.

I agree with everything you have said and I hope it changes and soon because there is no way that we can carry on the way we are playing, I thought it would change after the Liverpool loss but that hasn't happened.

    Thank you for your comment.
