Premier League Wage Bill Hits £1 billion

It has been revealed today that the total wages in the Premier League has gone over £1 billion for the first time. Most of the money has come from television rights deals and sponsorships.

The club who pays the most, to no surprise, is Chelsea. They spent over £172 million just on wages. Next on the list was Manchester United who spent £121 million on players wages, followed by Arsenal who spent £101 million. Liverpool was the only "top four" club who didn't spend over £100 million on wages. Liverpool paid their players a total of £90 million.

Deloitte's annual review of football finance (they published the information) has revealed the total debt among the Premier League clubs hit £3.1billion in 2007/8 while wage costs also rose from £227million to reach £1.2billion. That is a 23% rise.

This isn't a surprise to me at all, we all know that the Premier League is a very rich business and we all know that most of the Premier League clubs are in debt.
