Manchester United defender must prove his fitness ahead of the Champion's League final or he will face starting on the bench. Rio Ferdinand has been told that he must pass a fitness test ahead of Man United's final Premier League game of the season, this Sunday.
Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that it could be too big a risk to play the Ferdinand in the Champions League final without having played 90 minutes ahead of the match:
"I am hoping Rio will be fit for Sunday," Fergie said "If not then he's doubtful for Wednesday. I think he needs a game. To go into a Champions League final without playing for three weeks might be a bit much."
"The plan is for him to start training with the team on Thursday. Once he starts on the football training we will have a better idea about his availability for Sunday. So hopefully he will be fit."
Rio Ferdinand hasn't played any part of a game since Man United beat Arsenal in the Champion's League final second leg. If he isn't fit then Jonny Evans would replace him and Ferguson would have any problems with having to select Evans.
"I'd have no problem with it," Fergie added.
"I wouldn't be bothered one bit about selecting Jonny for the final. He has had a fantastic season, the kid. He is 21, and he's much like Gerard Pique - they grew up together here. It'd be a fitting tribute to our Academy if both players played in the final. It'd be a nice touch."
I am sure that if Evans does have to come in then he will do a great job just like he has done throughout the season when Ferdinand has been injured or Nemanja Vidic has been suspended.
